Delegates to the South Carolina United Methodist Conference meeting in Spartanburg in a close vote, affirmed their support of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). The N. C. Supreme Court Tuesday upheld the N. C. annexation law. Five Forsythe County couples had complained that Winston-Salem's Board of Aldermen had illegally moved to annex five sections of land in surrounding areas. They claimed that their rights to due process and equal protection had been violated because residents of annexed areas had no vote on the question of annexation. A measure to eliminate the lump sum death benefit now paid to Social Security recipients who have no surviving beneficiaries was approved Tuesday by the U. S. House Ways and Means Committee in a step that would save the hardpressed system an estimated $200 million in fiscal 1982. Arledge Reunion Sunday at 10 The Arledge Family Reunion will be held at Harmon Field on Sunday, June 7th beginning at 10 a.m. Lunch will be served at 1 pm. Please bring any family history available. Firemen Honored The First State Savings & Loan Association recently honored the Landrum Firemen for their dedication and devotion to duty by having a fish fry for the men. The men volunteer their time and service to the citizens of the Landrum area and risk their life with each fire call. Fire The Tryon Volunteer Fire Department was called to the home of Ms. Rhoda Johnson on S. Howard St., Wednesday about 10:25 a.m. The fire had made a great deal of headway before the alarm was turned in. Fire Chief Clarence Scoggins said that 13 firemen responded with two trucks and kept the rear of the house from burning. Chief Scoggins said that the front of the house was gutted. Billboard Gets Cut Down Here The Polk County Sheriff’s Department is on the lookout for someone who either doesn't like billboards or the local bank that used it for advertising. Clarence Whitesides of Hwy. 108, reported to the Sheriff’s Dept. Tuesday night that someone had taken a chain saw and cut the billboard down. The sign is on Mr, Whitesides property. Hickory Grove Baptist Young Women The Baptist Young Women of Hickory Grove Baptist have compiled some of their and their friends' favorite recipes into a Church Cookbook. Green Creek Little League Thursday Yankees at Red Sox Council Approves Town House Ordinance Approximately 35 people attended the public hearing Tuesday night at the Town Hall. The Tryon Planning Board had recommended to the Town that the Town’s Zoning Ordinance be changed on Town House Development. It had been recommended that the Board of Commissioners have the authority to approve Town House Development as special exception with review and suggestions from the Town Planning Board (The Town Planning Board did have this authority) The Planning Board also recommended that in R-1 District there be 2 units per acre or 2 or 3 on minimum size lot of 10,000 sq ft.; R-2 and R-3 be recommended to have a maximum of 5 1 ,4 townhouse units per acre. The Board of Commissioners approved two units per acre in R- 1 and a maximum of four units per acre in R-2 and R-3. This action was taken following the public hearings and is now in effect. At Pacolet Baptist The Rev Frank Mitchell and Margaret Mitchell will be at Pacolet Baptist Church on Sunday, June 7th. The Mitchells are retired missionaries to Chile The public is invited.
